Five Women Who Are Retiring From Their Posts at Colleges and Universities

Julia Zimmerman, dean of libraries at Florida State University, is retiring. She has served in her role as head of the university’s libraries for more than a decade. Earlier, she held library posts at Wake Forest University, Pennsylvania State University, Georgia Tech and Ohio University.

Zimmerman is a graduate of Florida State University, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree in library science from Emory University in Atlanta.

Jane Noble-Harvey, an associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Delaware, is retiring and has been granted emerita status. Her research has focused on human health and disease, particularly human cancer and infectious microbial diseases.

Dr. Noble-Harvey is a graduate of Simmons College in Boston. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco.

Verna Fitzsimmons, dean and CEO of the Polytechnic Campus of Kansas State University in Salina, will retire at the end of June. She has served in this role since 2013. Earlier, Dr. Fitzsimmons was an associate professor of applied engineering, sustainability, and technology at Kent State University in Ohio.

Dr. Fitzsimmons holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering, all from the University of Cincinnati.

Karla Spurlock-Evans is stepping down at the end of June from her post as dean of multicultural affairs and senior diversity officer at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. She joined the staff at the university in 1999 as director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Spurlock-Evans is a magna cum laude graduate of Barnard College in New York City, where she majored in political science. She earned a master’s degree in American studies at Emory University in Atlanta.

Rhonda Rogers, the executive assistant for Cultural and Community Centers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, is retiring. She joined the staff at the university in 1973 and served in a number of roles in student affairs, housing and residence life, and Greek life.

Rogers is a graduate of Wytheville Community College in Virginia.
