New Assignments for Eight Women Faculty Members

Ferhan Atici was named a Distinguished Professor at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Dr. Atici is a professor of mathematics who has served on the faculty at the university since 2003. Earlier, she taught at Ege University in Turkey.

Professor Atici holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Ege. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Cynthia Istook was appointed the Cornelson Family distinguished Professor of Textile and Apparel Design at North Carolina State University. She has served on the faculty for more than 20 years and leads the fashion development and product management and the fashion design programs. Dr. Istook is the first woman full professor in the College of Textiles at the university.

Professor Istook is a graduate of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Texas Woman’s University.

Joanne Kurtzberg, the Jerome S. Harris Professor of Pediatrics at the Duke University School of Medicine, has been assigned the additional duties of director of the new Marcus Center for Cellular Cures at the university.

Dr. Kurtzberg earned her medical degree at New York University.

Kimberly Boland was named interim chair of the department of pediatrics at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Since 2016, Dr. Boland has served as assistant dean of resident education and work environment at the medical school.

Dr. Boland is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and earned her medical degree at the University of Louisville.

Anne B. Newman, who holds the Katherine M. Detre Endowed Chair of Population Health Sciences and chairs the department of epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has been named director of the Aging Institute at the university.

Dr. Newman joined the faculty at the university in 2006. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master of public health degree, and a medical doctorate, all from the University of Pittsburgh.

Maureen Ryan, dean of the College of Arts and Letters and professor of English at the University of Southern Mississippi, was named special assistant to the provost at the university and University Distinguished Professor. Professor Ryan is the author of The Other Side of Grief: The Home Front and the Aftermath in American Narratives of the Vietnam War (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008).

Dr. Ryan is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Jana L. Jasinski, a professor of sociology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, was named vice provost for faculty excellence at the university. She has served in the role on an interim basis since July 2017. She joined the faculty at the university in 1999.

Dr. Jasinski holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in sociology from the University of New Hampshire.

Susan M. Pepin was appointed clinical professor in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University. She will also be the managing director of health and clinical partnerships and senior adviser to the executive vice president. Dr. Pepin has been serving as president of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust since 2014. Earlier, she was associate dean for diversity and inclusion and associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at the School of Medicine at Dartmouth College.

Dr. Pepin is a graduate of Yale University. She earned a second bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford in England. Professor Pepin earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco and holds a master of public health degree from Dartmouth College.
