Two Women Scholars Appointed to Endowed Professorships at Flagship State Universities

Lynn Stephen Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences and professor of anthropology at the University of Oregon was appointed to the Philip H. Knight Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences at the university. Professor Stephen founded the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies at the University of Oregon and served as director for nine years. She is an affiliated faculty member in programs on ethnic studies, Latin American studies, and women’s and gender studies. She is the author of several books including We Are the Face of Oaxaca: Testimony and Social Movements (Duke University Press, 2013). She is president-elect of the Latin American Studies Association.

Professor Stephen is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She holds a Ph.D. from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Patricia Richards, a professor of sociology and a professor of women’s studies in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, was named to the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship. Professor Richards is a core faculty member of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute and is an affiliate of Institute of Native American Studies. Professor Richards joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 2002. Her latest book is Race and the Chilean Miracle: Neoliberalism, Democracy, and Indigenous Rights (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2013).

Dr. Richards is graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.
