Five Women Appointed to Dean Positions at Colleges and Universities

Deborah-DeasDeborah Deas was appointed the Mark and Pam Rubin Dean of the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine. She will also serve as chief executive officer for clinical affairs at the university. Dr. Deans has been serving as interim dean of the College of Medicine and professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Deas is a graduate of the College of Charleston in South Carolina. She holds a master of public health degree from the University of South Carolina and a medical doctorate from the Medical University of South Carolina.

FuentesMontserrat Fuentes will be the next dean of the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University in Virginia. She will take on this new role on July 1. Currently, Dr. Fuentes is the James M. Goodnight Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Professor Fuentes is a graduate of the University of Valladolid in Spain, where she double majored in mathematics and music. She holds a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Chicago.

Kate HowardKate Howard was appointed dean of admissions and assistant vice president at the University of Southern Mississippi, effective June 27. Currently, Howard is senior associate director in the Office of Admissions, Recruitment and Orientation Services at the University of Memphis.

Howard is a graduate of the University of Memphis and holds an MBA from Bellhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. She is currently enrolled in the doctoral program in higher and adult education at the University of Memphis.

onye-ozuzuOnye Ozuzu was named dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College in Chicago. She has served as interim dean since July 2015. Previously, she chaired the dance department at the college.

Dean Ozuzu holds a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a master of fine arts degree in dance performance from Florida State University.

bauerNancy Bauer was named dean of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, which will become affiliated with Tufts University this summer. Dr. Bauer is a professor of philosophy and dean of academic affairs at Tufts university. Her latest book is How to Do Things With Pornography (Harvard University Press, 2015).

Professor Bauer holds a bachelor’s degree in social studies, a master’s degree in theological studies, and a Ph.D. in philosophy, all from Harvard University.
