Ardis D. Hoven was elected chair of the World Medical Association at the organization’s 200th council meeting in Oslo, Norway. Dr. Hoven is the first woman to lead the organization that represents physicians in 111 medical associations worldwide. For the past several years, Dr. Hoven has been the chair of the American Medical Association’s delegation to the World Medical Association. She will serve a two-year term as chair.
Dr. Hoven is a professor emerita at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. She was president of the American Medical Association from June 2013 to June 2014.
Born in Cincinnati, Dr. Hoven received her undergraduate degree in microbiology and then her medical degree from the University of Kentucky in Lexington. She completed her internal medicine and infectious disease training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
