In Memoriam: Judith A. Layzer, 1962 -2015

Judith Layzer, a professor of environmental policy in the department of urban studies and planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, died on May 28 after a long illness. She was 53 years old.

Professor Layzer was a graduate of the University of Michigan and earned a Ph.D. in political science at MIT. She taught at Middlebury College in Vermont from 1998 to 2003. She then joined the faculty at MIT as an assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor in 2007 and to full professor in 2014.

Dr.  Layzer was the author of several books including The Environmental Case: Translating Values Into Policy (Congressional Quarterly, 2002) and Open for Business: Conservatives’ Opposition to Environmental Regulation (MIT Press, 2012).

Dr. Layzer was a member of the team that won the women’s world championship in Ultimate Frisbee in 1998.
