Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
The William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct a study on interpersonal violence screening among college women. The research will focus on women’s experiences at college health centers. The grant project is under the directions of Melissa Sutherland, an associate professor at the nursing school. Dr. Sutherland is a graduate of Cornell University. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Binghamton University and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
The Mississippi University for Women received a grant from the Mississippi Digital Library to digitize a significant portion of the images in the university’s archives. The images will then be displayed online.
Drexel University‘s College of Medicine in Philadelphia received a grant from Susan G. Komen For the Cure to provide breast cancer early detection screening and treatment for uninsured patients. The grant will provide funds for mammograms, diagnostics, and treatment for about 500 women in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
The University of California, Riverside received a three-year, $346,500 grant from the Ford Foundation to support leadership training for women in war-torn countries. The funds will be used to plan a 10-day international institute that will be held on the university’s campus in 2016. Principal investigator, Yolanda T. Moses, a professor of anthropology at the university, stated that “the focus of this initiative is on the role higher education can play as an honest broker in rebuilding civil society, and building inclusive leadership at universities in countries emerging from years of war.”
With over 25 years of experience in higher education, business, and public service, Dr. Kollmann has been serving as chancellor of the New Mexico State University Global Campus. She is slated to become the next president of Vermont State University in July.
Throughout her career, Leeds has gained more than 25 years of experience as a professor and university administrator. Currently, she serves as dean of the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University.
Dr. Recasner has over two decades of experience as a tenured faculty member and senior administration in higher education. She has been serving as the interim president of Seattle Central University.
Dr. Quiñones, who has been serving as president of California State University, Monterey Bay, is slated to become the first Latina president of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on July 1.
Dr. Cooper Whitehead brings extensive experience in student affairs and academic leadership to her new role. She comes to Regis university from Boston College, where she has served as vice president of student affairs since 2021.
