Nancy Rose, the Charles P. Kindleberger Professor of Applied Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, has been appointed by President Obama as deputy assistant attorney general for economic analysis. She will take a leave of absence from MIT to assume her post at the Justice Department, beginning on September 8. Professor Rose will lead a staff of 50 economists who deal with mostly with antitrust issues.
“I became an economist because I was very interested in public policies at the intersection of competition policy and regulation,” Dr. Rose said. “This is an exciting opportunity to pivot from research to a direct role in applying economics to guide public policy that promotes a competitive and open marketplace.”
Professor Rose joined the MIT faculty in 1985. Since 1991, she has been the director of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s program in industrial organization.
Dr. Rose is a graduate of Harvard University, where she majored in economics and government. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT.
