Study Finds That States Are Effectively Raising Money for Breast Cancer Research

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found that states across the nation are effectively raising funds for breast cancer research and early detection programs through state lotteries, check-0ffs on income tax returns, and license plate programs.
The research found that 18 states have a check-off provision on state tax forms where filers can designate a portion of their refunds for breast cancer research. The median revenue generated from these programs was $115,o00. Twenty-six states had programs where motorists could order special “pink ribbon” license plates with the extra funds donated to breast cancer research. More than $4 million has been raised for breast cancer research with these license plate promotions.
The state of Illinois held a special state lottery from 2005 to 2009 to benefit breast cancer research. The lottery raised $7.4 million.
The study was published in September/October issue of Public Health Reports.
