The board of trustees of the State University of New York has appointed 11 faculty members to Distinguished Professorships. According to the university, “the Distinguished Professorship is conferred upon individuals who have achieved national or international prominence and a distinguished reputation within a chosen field. This distinction is attained through significant contributions to the research literature or through artistic performance or achievement in the case of the arts. The candidates’ work must be of such character that the individuals’ presence will tend to elevate the standards of scholarship of colleagues both within and beyond these persons’ academic fields.”
Two of the 11 faculty members named to Distinguished Professorships are women.
Margarita L. Dubocovich is a professor and chair of the department of pharmacology and toxicology at the University at Buffalo. She also serves as senior associate dean for inclusion and cultural enhancement. She is considered one of the world’s leading experts on the brain hormone melatonin. Dr. Dubocovich holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in biological chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina.
Aidong Zhang is a professor of computer science and engineering at the University at Buffalo. She also serves as department chair. Professor Zhang has been on the university’s faculty since 1994. She holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Professor Zhang is the author of Protein Interaction Networks: Computational Analysis (Cambridge University Press, 2009)
