Anna L. Tsing, a professor of anthropology at the University of California at Santa Cruz, has been selected as one of six Niels Bohr Professors by the Danish National Research Foundation. The professorships are designed to bring celebrated scholars to Denmark to conduct research programs “characterized by novelty, creativity, and excellence.” The professors spend parts of five years in Denmark and receive $5 million.
Dr. Tsing will spend the fall semester at Aarhus University, the largest university in Denmark, and then return to teach at Santa Cruz for the Spring 2014 semester. She will establish a transdisciplinary program on the Anthropocene, defined as the geologic epoch when humans have impacted the earth’s ecosystems.
Professor Tsing is a graduate of Yale University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. Among her books are Friction: An Ethnography of Global Connection (Princeton University Press, 2005) and In the Realm of the Diamond Queen: Marginality in an Out-of-the-Way Place (Princeton University Press, 1994).
