AAUW Issues a New Report on Women in Community Colleges

web-cover_large-280x170-1367011736The American Association of University Women has just released a new report on the status of women in community colleges. The report state that more than 4 million women are now enrolled in community colleges and they make up 57 percent of the total enrollments. The report offers a wide variety of informative charts and tables on the status of women in community colleges by factors such as age, race, ethnic group, employment status.

Perhaps the most interesting chapter in the 72-page report is “Meeting the Needs of Student Mothers.” About 25 percent of the women enrolled in community colleges are mothers. But the report notes, “Community colleges present an attractive option for mothers of young children, in part because they offer flexible schedules and low tuition. Unfortunately, limited access to child care disrupts the educational path of many mothers. Fewer than half of all community colleges offer on-campus child care, and available slots do not typically meet student demand.”

After a thorough examination of the status of women in community colleges, the authors of the report offer a substantial list of recommendations for improving opportunities for women at these institutions. WIAReport recommends that all community college administrators read this important document.
