Three Women Engineers Promoted and Granted Tenure at Utah State University

The College of Engineering at Utah State University has announced promotions and the awarding of tenure to 10 faculty members. Three of these promotions went to women.

Nadia Kouraytem, who joined the mechanical and aerospace engineering department in 2020, was promoted to associate professor. Dr. Kouraytem’s research includes evaluating the process-structure-property relationships in metal additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3D printing. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the American University of Beirut. Dr. Kouraytem holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia.

Cassandra McCall joined the engineering education department in 2021 as an assistant professor and has now been promoted to associate professor. Her goal is to enhance engineering diversity and inclusion by challenging traditional and normative concepts of who engineers are and what engineers do. Dr. McCall has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and a Ph.D. in engineering education from Virginia Tech.

Sierra Young was promoted to associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. She joined the department in 2022. Dr. Young serves a dual appointment with the Utah Water Research Laboratory, where she focuses on the development of field robotics, automation, and sensing systems for environmental and agricultural applications. She has a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from Cornell University. Dr. Young earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
