Five Women Scholars Appointed to Named Professorships at Universities

Carmella Kahn has been named the inaugural Davis-Kozoll Endowed Professor of Prevention Research and Practice in the College of Population Health at the University of New Mexico. She has over a decade of experience working with urban and rural Native American communities, participating in research projects centered on diabetes prevention, youth substance use, food systems, community resilience, and education.

Originally from Mariano Lake, New Mexico, Dr. Kahn completed her doctor of public health degree from the Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona.

Jiwon Choi has been named the Dennis C. Dau Professor of Instrumental Music at Northwest Missouri State University. A member of the department of fine and performing arts since 2016, she frequently collaborates with the university’s choirs, vocal and instrumental studios, student pianists, music faculty, and guest artists. As a professional pianist, she has performed in venues across the United States, South Korea, and Italy.

Dr. Choi received her bachelor of music degree in piano performance from Dong-Ah University in South Korea. She holds a master of music degree in piano performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Kansas.

Anne Larkin has been named the Celia and Isaac Haidak Professor in Medical Education at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. A faculty member since 2001, she has been serving as an associate professor of surgery and vice provost and senior associate dean for educational affairs. Her medical research focuses on the quality and outcomes of breast cancer surgery.

Dr. Larkin holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a medical degree from Columbia University.

Betsy Sinclair has been named the Thomas F. Eagleton University Professor of Public Affairs and Political Science at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She currently serves the university as chair of political science and assistant vice provost for digital transformation. Her research interests include American political and political methodology with an emphasis on individual political behavior.

Dr. Sinclair earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Redlands in California and her Ph.D. in social science from the California Institute of Technology.

Nancy Yunhwa Rao has been named the Board of Governors Professor of Music at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. As a music theorist, she studies the intersections between China and the West, particularly global perspectives in contemporary Chinese music. She is the author of numerous publications, including Chinatown Opera Theater in North America (University of Illinois Press, 2017).

Dr. Rao received her Ph.D. in music theory from the University of Michigan.
