Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Delaware State University has received a $499,603 grant from the United States Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women to strengthen the university’s approaches to addressing domestic dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking incidents on campus. The funding will go towards the development of a comprehensive prevention plan, as well as a peer mentor program.

University Health Services at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been awarded an $80,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Health’s Grant Partnership Opportunity for Colleges and Universities Abortion Project. The new funds will support the health services team continue its work to increase sexual and reproductive health and abortion access on campus, increase student engagement on reproductive health issues, and provide its services in a safe, confidential, and patient-centered manner.

Mary “Nora” Disis, the Helen B. Slonaker Endowed Professor of Cancer Research at the University of Washington School of Medicine, has received a $300,000 grant from Rivkin Center and the Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment Fund to advance research in ovarian cancer. Dr. Disis will lead a project aimed at developing a treatment to prevent the spread of chemotherapy-resistant strains of the disease.

Ayanna Howard Appointed the Twelfth President of Spelman College in Atlanta

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
