In Memoriam: Marina Angel, 1944-2025

Marina Angel, professor emerita at the Temple University Beasley School of Law in Philadelphia, passed away on February 1. She was 80 years old.

Angel’s career in academic began in 1971 as a professor with Hofstra University in New York. In 1979, she transitioned to Temple University, where she stayed until her retirement in 2017. During her four-decades-long tenure, she taught courses on criminal law and procedure, labor and employment law, juvenile law, women and the law, violence against women, and corrections. She held several leadership roles with the Beasley School of Law, including associate dean for graduate legal studies, symposium coordinator for several conferences, and summer session director for a study abroad program in Greece. She was also a dedicated mentor to her students, serving as an advisor for numerous law student organizations.

As a scholar, Angel was known for her research on civil rights, gender equity, and how violence against women influences legal policies. She received several awards throughout her career, including the Sandra Day O’Connor Award from the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Law School’s Section on Women in Legal Education.

Angel received her bachelor’s degree from Barnard College, her juris doctorate from Columbia Law School, and her master of laws degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
