Jennifer R. Henrichsen, assistant professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University, has received the 2026 Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Early Career Woman Scholar Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The award honors early-career scholars who demonstrate outstanding research and potential as an emerging leader in the field.
As a scholar, Dr. Henrichsen examines how structural conditions and evolving forms of risk shape journalistic work, and what those pressures mean for journalism and democratic life. She has published more than 30 scholarly works, including three books: War on Words: Who Should Protect Journalists? (Praeger, 2011), Journalism After Snowden: The Future of the Free Press in the Surveillance State (Columbia University Press, 2017), and National Security, Journalism, and Law in an Age of Information Warfare (Oxford University Press, 2024). Dr. Henrichsen’s work has been cited more than 300 times.
In addition to her primary faculty appointment, Dr. Henrichsen is senior personnel with the VICEROY Northwest Institute for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CySER), an affiliated fellow at Yale Law School’s Information Society Project (ISP), and an affiliated fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Media, Inequality & Change Center.
Dr. Henrichsen is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where she majored in communication and political science. She holds a master’s degree in international and European security from the University of Geneva in Switzerland and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in communication from the University of Pennsylvania.
