Amy Gutmann Receives Yale’s Legend in Leadership Award

Amy Gutmann, former president of the University of Pennsylvania, has received the Legend in Leadership Award from the Chief Executive Leadership Institute at the Yale School of Management. The award is presented to “established chief executive officers who offer inspiring legacies of contributing creativity, character, and commercial impact across cultures, industries, countries, and continents.”

Dr. Gutmann served as Penn’s eighth president from 2004 to 2022, making her the institution’s longest serving president. During her long tenure, she significantly increased the university’s endowment, expanding Penn’s capabilities in student financial aid, innovative research, and healthcare. In recognition of Dr. Gutmann’s career, Penn recently launched Amy Gutmann Hall, the university’s new center for data science research.

Upon her retirement from Penn, Dr. Gutmann was appointed by President Biden to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, making her the first woman to serve in that capacity. Earlier in her career, she was appointed by President Obama to chair the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues.

Dr. Gutmann holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University. She earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
