In Memoriam: Margaret Patrice Slattery, 1926-2024

Sister Margaret Patrice Slattery, former president and chancellor of the University of the Incarnate World in Santonio, Texas, passed away late last month. She was 98 years old.

Sister Slattery had a long tenure at the University of the Incarnate World that consisted of both academic and administrative positions. When she first joined the institution, it was known as Incarnate World College and only enrolled women students. She served as a professor in the English department and had a stint as department chair. She later served as the college’s academic dean.

In 1972, Sister Slattery was named president of Incarnate World College, one year after the institution began accepting male students. In 1985, she was named chancellor and served in that position until her retirement. Under her leadership, the institution established several academic initiatives, enhanced its infrastructure, and created financial support services for students.

As a scholar of English and religion, Sister Slattery authored Promises to Keep (1995), a history of the Sisters of the Charity of the Incarnate World congregation.

Sister Slattery held a bachelor’s degree in English from Incarnate World College, a master’s degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
