Orit Bashkin has been named the Mabel Greene Myers Professor in the department of Near Eastern languages and civilizations at the University of Chicago. As a historian specializing on the intellectual, social and cultural history of the modern Middle East, Bashkin delves into Iraqi history, the history of Iraqi Jews, the Arab cultural revival movement in the late nineteenth century, and the connections between modern Arab history and Arabic literature. Her most recent books include the edited volume Jews and Journeys: Travel and Performance of Jewish Identity (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2021).
Dr. Bashkin is a graduate of Tel Aviv University. where she majored in Middle Eastern history and Arabic Literature. She holds a master’s degree in Middle Eastern and African history from Tel Aviv University and a Ph.D. in Near Eastern studies from Princeton University.
Ruth Blake, a leading marine and environmental biogeochemist and geomicrobiologist, was recently appointed the Edward P. Bass Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences and professor of chemical engineering and environment at Yale University. She joined the Yale faculty in 2000.
Dr. Blake is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit where she earned a bachelor’s in geology. She also holds a master’s degree in hydrogeology from the University of Texas and a Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of Michigan.
Paz Galupo, whose research focuses on the intersection of sexual orientation and gender identity, was installed as the Audre Lorde Distinguished Professor in Sexual Health & Education during a ceremony at Washington University in St. Louis. She was a professor of psychology at Towson University in Maryland. Professor Galupo is editor of the Journal of Bisexuality and associate editor of the International Journal of Transgender Health.
Professor Galupo is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio, where she majored in psychology. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Arkansas.
Dr. Geneco comes to her new role from Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she has served as provost for the past four years. She is slated become the University at Buffalo's first woman president on August 10.
The new presidents are Laurie A. Boeding at the Technical College of the Lowcountry and Melissa Frank-Alston at Northeastern Technical College. Both women are expected to begin their presidencies on July 1.
Dr. McEwen comes to her new appointment following four years as president and vice chancellor of Victoria University in the University of Toronto. Earlier, she served in several leadership roles at the University of Toronto Mississauga. She received some of her education in the United States.
The new provosts are Barbara Rodriguez at the University of New Mexico, Bridget Chalk at Manhattan University in New York, and Jaci Lederman at Vincennes University in Indiana. All three women had been serving as their university's interim provost.
Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
