Ingrid Daubechies Wins the 2023 Wolf Prize in Mathematics

Ingrid Daubechies, the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been awarded the 2023 Wolf Prize in Mathematics. The prize includes an award of $100,000.

“Ingrid Daubechies is awarded the Wolf Prize for her work in the creation and development of wavelet theory and modern time frequency analysis,” said Professor Michael Lin, council member of the Israel-based Wolf Foundation. “Daubechies has also made unparalleled contributions to developing real-world applications of harmonic analysis, introducing sophisticated image processing techniques to fields ranging from art to evolutionary biology and beyond.”

Before joining the faculty at Duke, Professor Daubechies taught at Princeton University from 1994 to 2011. There, she was the first woman full professor in the department of mathematics. Dr. Daubechies was also the first woman president of the International Mathematical Union.

Dr. Daubechies holds a bachelor’s degree in theoretical physics and a Ph.D. in quantum mechanics from Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium.
