Christy Harris Lemak Honored by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration

Christy Harris Lemak, professor and chair of the department of health services administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been named the recipient of the 2022 Gary L. Filerman Prize for Educational Leadership given out by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.

The Filerman Prize recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of healthcare management education, who have exhibited leadership in their field, and who have enriched their institutions, their students, and healthcare management through their work.

“Receiving the 2022 Filerman Prize is the most meaningful honor of my career. Dr. Filerman and many of the previous recipients have been my mentors, role models, co-authors, and friends,” Dr. Lemak said. “I am grateful for this recognition and, more importantly, to have been able to work with dedicated individuals — academic colleagues, industry executives, and students — to improve health administration education in order to develop leaders who will change the world.”

Dr. Lemak teaches and conducts research in the areas of health care management and leadership development, with an emphasis on how leadership and organizational factors are associated with high performance.

Professor Lemak is a graduate of the University of Illinois, where she majored in health and medical administrative services. She earned an MBA and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. in health services from the Univerity of Michigan.
