In Memoriam: Joanne H. Clarey, 1941-2021

Joanne Clarey, a novelist, counselor, and educator who taught at the University of Maine and the Univerity of Southern Maine, died on November 2 at her home in Jackson, New Hampshire. She was 80 years old.

A native of York, Pennsylvania, Dr. Clarey grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. After teaching for 13 years in the public schools, Dr. Clarey returned to higher education to earn a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and a doctorate in educational psychology at the University of Maine.

After teaching at the University of Maine, Dr. Clarey was named director of the women’s studies program at the University of Southern Maine in Portland. She established a private practice in Portland, offering psychotherapy to women and couples, and consulted with nonprofit organizations. Dr. Clarey was the author of The Hummingbird Falls Mystery series and the Dr. Christie McMorrow Psychothriller series. Her full list of tiles can be found here.
