Three Women Who Have Been Appointed Chairs of Their Academic Departments

Maureen Tierney was appointed chair of the department of clinical research at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. She will also serve as assistant dean for clinical research and public health and associate professor of medicine. Dr. Tierney has held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and Cornell University Medical College.

Dr. Tierney holds a master’s degree in health services administration from Harvard University. She received her medical training at Cornell University.

Laura Marler, the Jim and Pat Coggin Endowed Professor of Management in Mississippi State University’s College of Business, has been assigned new duties as head of the department of management and information systems. Her research is focused on proactive personality and behavior in the workplace and on understanding the management of human talent in family firms.

Professor Marler is a graduate of Louisiana College, where she majored in accounting. She holds an MBA and a doctorate in business administration from Louisiana State University.

Namandjé Bumpus was appointed chair of the department of pharmacology and molecular sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. Dr. Bumpus joined Johns Hopkins in 2010 as an assistant professor in the Division of Clinical Pharmacology. She became an associate professor in 2015, and, from 2015 to 2017, she served as the school’s first associate dean for institutional and student equity.

Dr. Bumpus holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Michigan.
