Shelley Haley, the Edward North Chair of Classics and professor of Classics and Africana Studies at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, was recently elected president-elect of the Society for Classical Studies for 2020. Her term as president-elect begins in January. She will serve as president in 2021, and then as immediate past-president in 2022.
The organization was founded in 1869 as the American Philological Association. It is “the principal learned society in North America for the study of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literatures, and civilizations,” according to the group’s website. Today, membership includes more than 3,000 individuals, along with more than 200 libraries and 50 classics departments.
Professor Haley is an expert on Cleopatra and has conducted extensive research on the role of a classical education in the lives and careers of 19th-century college-educated Black women. She joined the faculty at Hamilton College in 1989.
Dr. Haley is a graduate of Syracuse University in New York. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan.
