Hamilton College, the highly selective liberal arts educational institution in Clinton, New York, has announced the promotion of five faculty members to the rank of full professor. Three of these promotions went to women.
Kate Brown was promoted to professor of physics. She studies cosmology, fundamental physics, and interdisciplinary science. Dr. Brown serves on the international editorial board of the Journal of Physics Communications. She joined the Hamilton College faculty in 2014. Professor Brown is a graduate of the University of New Mexico. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Courtney Gibbons was appointed a full professor of mathematics and statistics. She is the director of the college’s data science program. Professor Gibbons works on problems from commutative algebra involving free resolutions of modules over graded rings and factorization in monoids. A member of the college’s faculty since 2013, Dr. Gibbons is a graduate of Colorado College. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Pavitra Sundar was promoted to professor of literature and creative writing. She is a feminist teacher-scholar with expertise in cinema and media studies, sound studies, postcolonial literary and cultural studies, and women’s and gender studies. She is the director of Hamilton’s cinema and media studies program. Professor Sundar is the author of Listening with a Feminist Ear: Soundwork in Bombay Cinema (University of Michigan Press, 2023). A member of the faculty since 2016, Dr. Sundar is a graduate of Ithaca College in New York. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
