University of California, Davis Scholar to be Honored by the Geological Society of America

Isabel Montanez will be honored by the Geological Society of AmericaIsabel Montanez, the Chancellor’s Leadership Professor at the University of California, Davis, has been named the recipient of the 2017 Laurence L. Sloss Award from the Geological Society of America. Professor Montanez, who is president-elect of the society, will be honored at the organization’s annual meeting in October.

Professor Montanez is being honored for her scientific contributions to geology, her service to the society, and for mentoring young women geoscientists. Dr. Montanez joined the faculty at the University of California, Davis in 1998. From 1990 to 1997, she served on the faculty at the University of California, Riverside. Her research focuses on periods of major climate change in the Earth’s early history and how carbon dioxide in the planet’s atmosphere influences climate.

Dr. Montanez is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in geology. She earned a Ph.D. in geology at Virginia Tech.
