Five Women Appointed to Dean Positions at Colleges and Universities

koretsky-carla-portCarla M. Koretsky was appointed dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, effective July 1. She is a professor of geosciences at the university. Dr. Koretsky joined thee faculty at Western Michigan University in 2000.

Professor Koretsky is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where she majored in earth and planetary sciences. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in earth and planetary sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Ryan, Maureen3Maureen Ryan is the new dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Southern Mississippi. She has served as interim dean since May 2015 and is a professor of English at the university. Professor Ryan is the author of The Other Side of Grief: The Home Front and the Aftermath in American Narratives of the Vietnam War (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008) and Innocence and Estrangement in the Fiction of Jean Stafford (Louisiana State University Press, 1987).

Dr. Ryan is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Temple University in Philadelphia.

JollyLaura Dunn Jolly was appointed dean of the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University, effective July 5. She has been serving as professor of textiles, merchandising and interiors at the University of Georgia. She joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 2007 and served as dean of the cooperative extension in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences for three years.

Professor Jolly holds master’s and doctoral degrees in clothing, textiles, and merchandising from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

ScottLindaLinda Scott was chosen as the next dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, effective July 15. She is the associate dean for academic affairs at the School of Nursing of the University of Illinois at Chicago. She also serves as an associate professor of health systems science and director of graduate studies. Before joining the faculty at the University of Illinois, Dr. Scott was a professor of nursing and associate dean for graduate programs at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

Dr. Scott is a graduate of Michigan State University. She holds a master’s degree in nursing administration from Grand Valley State University and a Ph.D. in nursing health care systems from the University of Michigan.

Whitney-Soule175Whitney Soule was appointed dean of admissions and financial aid at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Since 2009 she has been director of admissions at the college. Before joining the admissions staff at Bowdoin, Soule served for 11 years on the admissions staff at Connecticut College in New London.

Soule is a graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where she majored in English. She holds a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.
