Five Women in New Teaching Roles

ggoloverdaGalina Goloverda was promoted to full professor of chemistry at Xavier University in New Orleans. She has been on the faculty at the historically Black university since 1999. Previously, she taught at the University of Iowa and at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.

Dr. Goloverda is a native of the Ukraine. She earned a Ph.D. in physical-organic chemistry from the Pisarzhevskii Institute of Physical Chemistry in Kiev.

creel2Barbara Creel was promoted to full professor and granted tenure at the University of New Mexico School of Law. She joined the faculty at the law school in 2007. Previously, she served as tribal liaison for the Portland district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and with the National Advisory Council for Indian Education in Washington, D.C.

Professor Creel is a graduate of the University of Colorado and the University of New Mexico School of Law.

april_vallerandApril Vallerand was named the inaugural holder of the Nursing Alumni Endowed Professorship in the College of Nursing at Wayne State University in Detroit. Professor Vallerand’s current research focuses on cancer pain in African Americans.

Dr. Vallerand is a graduate of Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. She holds a master’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

weichbrodtElissa Yukiko Weichbrodt was appointed assistant professor of art at Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. She was an instructor of art at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Weichbrodt is a graduate of Covenant College and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in art history and archaeology from Washington University.

HaoWEBEmma Qian Hao was promoted to associate professor of business and granted tenure at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Dr. Hao joined the Wilkes faculty in 2007 after teaching at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where she earned a Ph.D. in economics. She holds an MBA from Washington University.

Before coming to the United States, Dr. Hao was an accountant in China.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is a national program run by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Dr. Yelick, a computer scientist and longtime UC Berkeley faculty member, will become the laboratory's next director on July 1.

Two Women Selected for Key Interim Leadership Roles with the Universities of Wisconsin

Renée Wachter, chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, has been selected to serve as interim president of the Universities of Wisconsin. Maria Cuzzo, provost of UW-Superior, will serve as the university's interim chancellor while Dr. Wachter assumes her new responsibilities.
