
Dr. Kaufman joined the faculty at Mount Holyoke in 1954. After retiring from teaching she was a co-founder of the Five College Learning in Retirement Program. She was elected as a county commissioner at the age of 73 and served from 1995 to 1998. She was active in a local book reading club even after her 90th birthday.
Professor Kaufman received degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Washington and held a Ph.D. in English literature from the University of Minnesota.
