Women Faculty Win $4.5 Million Settlement in Case Filed Against UMDNJ

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark entered into $4.5 million settlement with 10 women professors who had claimed they were paid less than their male counterparts.

The case was originally filed in 2007 by faculty members in biochemistry, neurology, radiology, psychology, and pathology. They presented information that women hired as full professors were offered average salaries of $135,652, while the average salaries of males hired as full professors was $154,768. Women who were promoted to full professor from within the university also had lower average salaries than men promoted to full professors, according to the lawsuit.
