A Dozen Women Appointed to New Administrative Roles at Universities

Shayne Buchwald-Nickoles has been promoted to deputy chief of investigations for the Johns Hopkins Police Department. She most recently served as director of strategic communications for public safety at Johns Hopkins University. Before her tenure at Johns Hopkins, she spent more than two decades with the Baltimore Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Buchwald-Nickoles received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pennsylvania State University and her master’s degree in clinical psychology from Towson University in Maryland.

Sloan Cargill has been appointed vice president for institutional advancement and external affairs at Jackson State University in Mississippi and executive director of the JSU Development Foundation, Inc. She brings significant experience in institutional advancement to her new role, including service as director of annual giving at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Cargill is a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she majored in sociology with a minor in women, gender, and sexuality studies.

Erin Thomas has been named associate director of development for the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. For the past five years, she has served as director of development at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkoma. Earlier, she was the assistant manager of volunteer and outreach services at the Fayetteville Public Library.

Thomas is an alumna of the University of Arkansas, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

Ashleigh Jones has been named director of athletics communications at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. She most recently served as associate director of athletics communications at DePauw University in Indiana.

Jones is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio, where she majored in kinesiology with a minor in communications. She holds a master’s degree in leadership with a focus on sports leadership from North Central College in Illinois.

Emily Cox has been appointed vice chancellor for university affairs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Most recently, she served as acting city manager for the City of Little Rock. Previously, she was director of policy and budget for former Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe.

Cox is a graduate of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where she majored in political science. She holds a master’s degree in education policy and management from Harvard University.

Kellie Campbell has been appointed chief information officer at the University of Vermont. She comes to her new role from the Vermont State Colleges System, where she was the chief information officer and vice president of information technology. Her background includes experience in project and change management, strategic planning, budgeting, resource management, and system and digital transformation.

Dr. Campbell received her doctorate in higher education from Northeastern University.

Sara Sander has been named senior vice provost for student success at Purdue Global. With a background in online education that spans nearly three decades, she most recently served as dean of Purdue Global’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Earlier, she was dean of Purdue Global’s College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Sander received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in communication from the University of Arkansas. She holds a Ph.D. in adult education from Capella University.

Anne Hosler has been promoted from interim director to permanent director of the Broadcast Media Center at the University of Montana. She has worked for the center since 2012, previously serving as membership manager and director of development. Earlier in her career, she was director of development for Montana Public Radio.

Hosler holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s degree in public administration from the University of Montana.

Adanna J. Johnson has been named associate chief academic officer for faculty affairs at the University of the District of Columbia. She comes to her new role from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where she was associate vice president for student equity and inclusion. Earlier in her tenure, she was the senior associate dean of students and director of diversity, equity, and student success.

Dr. Johnson is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University in Texas, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in psychology from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Jennifer Walker has been promoted to vice president of enrollment management at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She first joined the university in 2007 and has since held several roles in admissions. Most recently, she served as dean of admissions and financial aid.

Walker received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Iona University in New York and her master’s degree in organizational and industrial psychology from Columbia University.

Nichole Rustad has been named associate vice president for university communications and marketing at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She comes to her new role after 13 years with the University of Dayton. She most recently served as the university’s executive director of advancement communications.

Rustad is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Dayton, where she majored in communications and public relations.

Nancy Gruber has been appointed assistant vice president for resource management and planning for the outreach and international affairs division at Virginia Tech. She has been with the university for over three decades. Prior to her new role, she was director of finance and administration for the division’s office of engagement.

Gruber earned her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business.
