Carolina Harada Receives National Award for Outstanding Medical School Teaching and Advising

Caroline Harada, professor of medical education in the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been awarded the 2024 Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges. The annual award recognizes one American medical school faculty member for outstanding service in teaching and advising.

Dr. Harada holds several leadership positions within the UAB School of Medicine. She serves as the associate dean for strategic initiatives, co-founder of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama, founder of the Health Equity Scholar Program, director of the Office of Service Learning, and director of Project Advancing Health Equity through Alabama’s Doctors. Throughout her tenure with the university, she has been dedicated to expanding research and clinical opportunities, developing new curricula, and establishing mentorship programs for medical students.

In addition to her academic work, Dr, Harada is a practicing geriatrician at UAB, providing care to older adults with complex syndromes such as falls, polypharmacy, and dementia. Before joining the UAB community in 2008, she completed an internal medicine residency and geriatrics fellowship at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Harada received her bachelor’s degree from Brown University and her medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine.
