The Dwindling Number of Men in British Higher Education

New data from the British government shows that nationwide there are 984,000 women in higher education degree programs compared to 713,000 men. Of the so-called Russell Group of 24 leading universities, men make up a majority at only three institutions. The data also shows that 56 percent of all places in medical schools in the United Kingdom are held by women. Some 60 percent of those admitted to the rolls of solicitors in 2010 were women.

At the Royal Veterinary College, 75 percent of the new students are women. For the first time, white men are included on the list of “underrepresented groups” that qualify for a program to boost enrollments of minorities at the veterinary school.
