BJ Casey, the Christina L. Williams Professor of Neuroscience at Barnard College in New York City, is the winner of the 2023 Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Neuroscience. The honor recognizes an individual with significant career achievements who has promoted the professional advancement of women in neuroscience.
“This really is an award for all the accomplishments of my mentees that I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with,” said Dr. Casey.
As a scientist, she has made major advances in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) field and helped to guide juvenile justice reform by pioneering neuroscience research that is used by lawyers and judges in legal cases. During her six-year tenure at Yale University, she was a co-principal investigator on the largest study in the United States on brain development and health, which followed 12,000 youth over the course of 10 years.
A native of Kinston, North Carolina, Professor Casey holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, She earned a doctorate in experimental psychology and behavioral neuroscience from the University of South Carolina.
