Four Women Presidents Have Announced They Are Leaving Their Posts

Tennessee State University President Glenda Glover announced that she will retire following the 2023-2024 academic year. She became president in January 2013.

Dr. Glover is a certified public accountant. In addition to her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tennessee State University, Dr. Glover holds a law degree from Georgetown University, an MBA from Clark Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. in business economics and policy from George Washington University.

In 2021, Erica Muhl became the first woman president of the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She took a leave of absence in June and the college has now announced that she will not return. No reason was given for Dr. Muhl’s departure.

Dr. Muhl came to Berklee College after a 30-year career at the University of Southern California, where she was dean and founding executive director of the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation. She holds a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

Mary K. Boyd has stepped down as president of Emmanuel College in Boston after only one year on the job. In announcing her resignation, the board of trustees praised Dr. Boyd’s efforts during her one year as president but gave no reason for her departure.

From 2017 to 2022, Dr. Boyd served as provost at Berry College in Mount Berry, Georgia. A native of Montreal, Canada, Dr. Boyd earned a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Toronto.

Sonya Williams resigned as chancellor of Eastern Iowa Community College, after serving in the post for just one year. She was under contract through June 2025. A press release stated that she had resigned for personal reasons.

Before becoming chancellor of Eastern Iowa Community College, Dr. Williams served as vice president of education and chief academic officer at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. A native of Norman, Oklahoma, Dr. Williams graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology and a Ph.D. in anatomical sciences and cell biology/neurosciences.
