Four Women Awarded Tenure at Hamilton College in New York

Hamilton College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Clinton, New York, has awarded tenure to 10 faculty members. Four of the faculty members awarded tenure are women. All of the appointments are effective July 1.

Alexsia T. Chan was named an associate professor of government. She joined the faculty at the college in 2016. Dr. Chan’s research examines authoritarian politics and inequality with a focus on China. She is the author of the book Beyond Coercion: The Political Logic of Inequality in China, under contract with Cambridge University Press. Dr. Chan is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley.

Natalie Nannas has taught biology at Hamilton College since 2017. Her research focuses on how genetic information, packaged into chromosomes, is properly segregated when cells divide in meiosis, the specialized division that creates egg and sperm and how this process is safeguarded as errors can lead to miscarriage, infertility, and genetic disorders. Dr. Nannes is a graduate of Grinnell College in Iowa. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Harvard University.

Anne Valente teaches literature and creative writing at Hamilton College. She joined the faculty in 2017. She is the author of two novels Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down (William Morrow, 2016) and The Desert Sky Before Us (Thorndike Press, 2019). Dr. Valente is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. She earned master’s degrees at the University of Illinois and Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati.

Keelah Williams is an evolutionary psychologist whose current research focuses on two areas: friendship and legal decision-making. She joined the Hamilton faculty in 2017. Dr. Williams is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She holds a master’s degree, a juris doctorate, and a Ph.D. from Arizona State University. During her time in law school, she served as editor-in-chief of the Arizona State Law Journal.
