Megan Walsh Will Be the Next Leader of the University of Maine at Machias

Megan Walsh has been named dean and campus director of the University of Maine at Machias. She will begin her new role on December 19.

“I believe deeply that universities have an opportunity and a responsibility to be active members in their communities,” Dr. Walsh said. “I am absolutely thrilled to be moving to the Down East region to serve UMaine Machias and look forward to building many new relationships there.”

Dr. Walsh is a professor of English and director of the honors program at St. Bonaventure University in New York. In 2021–22, Professor Walsh was acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. As chair of the department of English, Dr. Walsh led multiple curricular revisions, including the development of a new bachelor’s degree program in literary publishing and editing.

Professor Walsh’s research focuses on early U.S. literary culture. She is the author of The Portrait and the Book: Illustration and Literary Culture in Early America (University of Iowa Press, 2017).

Dr. Walsh joined the faculty at St. Bonaventure University as an assistant professor of English in 2011. She was promoted to associate professor in 2016, followed by her promotion to full professor in 2018.

Professor Walsh is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in history and English. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from Temple University in Philadelphia.
