Seven Women in Higher Education Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

Eva Skuka has been appointed dean of the College of Health Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She was associate provost and dean of the School of Health Studies at Berkeley College.

Dr. Skuka earned her medical degree at the University of Tirana School of Medicine in Albania. She holds a Ph.D. in human services and healthcare administration from Capella University.

Martha Glass, assistant vice president for administration for student affairs at Virginia Tech, has been named interim dean of students. Dr. Glass will officially assume her new role on July 1 while continuing in her current position.

Dr. Glass holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in student affairs counseling from Radford University in Virginia. She earned a master’s degree in sociology and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.

Michelle Knight-Manuel has been appointed dean of the Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver. She has been serving as a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City. Dr. Knight-Manuel is the co-author of College-Ready: Preparing Black and Latina/o Students for Higher Education – A Culturally Relevant Approach (Teachers College Press, 2013).

Dr. Knight-Manuel is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she majored in French. She holds a master’s degree from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a Ph.D. in curriculum and teaching from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ingrid S. Fulmer will be the next dean of the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She was vice provost for faculty advancement and faculty affairs and a professor in human resource management at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Dr. Fulmer is a graduate of the University of Memphis, where she majored in accounting and marketing. She holds a master’s degree in tax accounting from the University of Alabama and a Ph.D. in management from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Shannon Hader, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and deputy executive director of programmes at the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, has been named the dean of the School of International Service at American University in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Hader is a graduate of Stanford University. She holds a medical doctorate and a master of public health degree from Columbia University.

Susan C. Alberts, the Robert F. Durden Distinguished Professor of Biology and chair of the department of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University will be the next dean of the Natural Sciences at the university, effective July 2023.

Professor Alberts is a graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She holds a master’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Amy Murtha, an accomplished researcher and a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine, has been named dean of the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Most recently, Dr. Murtha was a professor and chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive services at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Murtha is a graduate of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, which is now the Drexel University College of Medicine.
