Three Women Scholars Selected to Serve as Presidents of National Organizations

Hyeyoung Lim, an associate professor in the department of criminal justice at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has been named president of the Korean Society of Criminology in America. The society pursues scholarly research and professional activities in Korea-related criminology and criminal justice areas and aims to create a multidisciplinary society of academics, researchers, policymakers, administrators, and practitioners.

Dr. Lim is a graduate of Sookmyung Women’s University in Korea, where she majored in computer science and educational psychology. She holds a master’s degree in criminology from Dongguk University in Korea and a master’s degree in management information security from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Lim earned a Ph.D. in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Talitha Washington, a professor of the mathematical sciences at Clark Atlanta University and the director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative, has been named president-elect of the Association for Women in Mathematics. She will become president of the organization in 2023.

A native of Indiana, Dr. Washington is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, where she majored in mathematics. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Connecticut. She was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Connecticut.

Kathy M. Sherman-Morris, a professor of geosciences at Mississippi State University, is the new president of the National Weather Association, a nationwide professional association supporting and promoting “excellence in operational meteorology.” The organization was founded in 1975. Dr. Sherman-Morris’ research concentrates primarily on the communication of weather information, risk perception, and the individual level responses to extreme weather events.

Dr. Sherman-Morris earned a bachelor’s degree in social studies education specializing in geography from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree in geosciences from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. In geography from Florida State University.
