Bowdoin College Professor Wins the Salvatori Prize From the Claremont Institute in California

Jean Yarbrough, the Gary M. Pendy Sr. Professor of Social Sciences at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, has been awarded the Henry Salvatori Prize, presented each year by the Claremont Institute in Upland, California, to an individual “who has distinguished himself or herself by an understanding of, and actions taken to, preserve and foster the principles upon which the United States was built.”

Professor Yarbrough’s teaching areas include political philosophy and American political thought. She is the author of American Virtues: Thomas Jefferson on the Character of a Free People (University of Kansas Press, 1998) and Theodore Roosevelt and the American Political Tradition (University Press of Kansas, 2012). She serves on the editorial boards of The Review of Politics and Polity, and is a past president of the New England Political Science Association. Dr. Yarbrough currently serves as a member of the National Council on the Humanities, a board of 26 distinguished private citizens appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate.

Dr. Yarbrough is a graduate of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the New School in New York City.
