Four Women Who Have Been Assigned to New Roles as Diversity Officers

Janice Hamlet was named associate vice provost for faculty mentoring and diversity at Nothern Illinois University. She is a professor of communication at the university and has served on the faculty for more than two decades.

Dr. Hamlet is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith Univerity in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she majored in English and communications. She holds master’s degrees in journalism and education and a Ph.D. in education from Ohio State University.

Araceli Frias was appointed assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Since 2015, she has been serving as assistant dean for diversity at the University of Utah.

Dr. Frias holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in experimental psychology from Eastern Washington University. She earned a Ph.D. in cultural studies and social thought in eduction from Washington State University.

Jerima DeWese is the inaugural chief diversity officer and dean of diversity at Queens College of the City University of New York. Most recently, DeWese served as the chief diversity and affirmative action officer, Title IX coordinator, and ADA compliance officer at Purchase College of the State University of New York.

DeWese holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration/human resources administration and a master’s degree in urban affairs/public management from Queens College.

Diane Forbes Berthoud is the inaugural chief equity, diversity, and inclusion officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She was the associate vice chancellor of equity, diversity, and inclusion at the University of California, San Diego. She joined the staff at UCSD in 2011.

Dr. Forbes Berthoud holds a bachelor’s degree in communication from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. She received a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in organizational communication and social psychology from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
