Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.
The University of Denver received a three-year grant from the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention for the development of an empirically based trauma treatment program for juvenile justice-involved girls, primarily those who have experienced trauma. Apryl Alexander, a forensic psychologist at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology, and Tracy Vozar, a clinical professor at the Graduate School of Professional Psychology, are leading the research.
The University of California, Davis received a $15.7 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to continue its research on how infections during pregnancy can lead to psychiatric illness and developmental disorders in women’s offspring years later, and how to detect, prevent or treat these disorders. The researchers will focus on discovering biomarkers for at-risk pregnancies and new treatments to prevent the detrimental effects of maternal infection on brain development in offspring.
The National Junior College Athletic Association has received a $150,000 grant from the National Football League that will be used to support member institutions that are instituting flag football programs for women students. Thirty NJCAA programs have already committed to adding women’s flag football, and more than 60 are expected in the second year.
