Jean’ne Shreeve Celebrates 60 Years on the Chemistry Department Faculty at the University of Idaho

Jean’ne Shreeve is a University Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of Idaho. Dr. Shreeve recently celebrated an amazing milestone. She has been on the faculty at the university for 60 years. Dr. Shreeve is 87 years old.

Dr. Shreeve joined the faculty at the University of Idaho in 1961. For much of her career, Dr. Shreeve’s research focused on synthesizing compounds that contain fluorine, an extremely reactive element that can be used in rocket fuel oxidizers. She and her research associates have produced 700 publications in reviewed journals.

In addition to her teaching duties, Dr. Shreeve has served as chair of the chemistry department for 14 years. She also was the university’s vice president for research for 12 years.

Ginger Carney, dean of the College of Science at the University of Idaho, notes that “Dr. Shreeve played an important role in establishing U of I as a major research university. Not only is she a world-renowned fluorine chemist, her students and postdoctoral associates have established their own storied careers in industry and academia. Her impact is far-reaching.”

Dr. Shreeve was born in Deer Lodge, Montana, in 1933. She is a 1953 graduate of the University of Montana. She earned a master’s degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Washington. Dr. Shreeve did postdoctoral study at the University of Cambridge in England.
