In Memoriam: E. Jacquelin Dietz

Jacquelin Dietz, professor emerita of mathematics at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, died on December 16.

Professor Dietz was a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio where she majored in mathematics and psychobiology. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in statistics at the University of Connecticut.

After earning her doctorate, Professor Dietz joined the faculty at North Carolina State University. There, in 1992, she became the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Statistics Education. The journal became an official publication of the American Statistical Association in 1999. In 2004, she was hired to teach at Meredith College, where she chaired the department of mathematics and computer science for five years. She taught at Meredith College for 10 years.

Cammey Cole Manning, professor and current chair of mathematics at Meredith College, stated that “Jackie made an impact on so many lives — at Meredith, at NC State, and in the whole statistics community. For those of us who were fortunate enough to work with her, she was an incredible mentor, colleague, and friend.”
