Jill M. Baren is the New Provost at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia

Jill M. Baren has been named provost and vice president of academic affairs at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. The university enrolls about 1,200 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students, according to the most recent data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 64 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Baren comes to the University of the Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania where she has been serving as a professor of emergency medicine, pediatrics, and medical ethics at the Perelman School of Medicine. She was chair of the department of emergency medicine at Penn from 2011 to 2017, where she was the first woman to hold the position. Dr. Baren is the current president of the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Baren received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Baren also holds a master’s degree in bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania and completed an executive MBA from the Heller School of Management and Social Policy at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
