The Next President of Stony Book University of the State University of New York System

The State University of New York Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Maurie McInnis as the sixth president of Stony Brook University on Long Island in New York. She will take office on July 1.

Stony Brook University is a large research institution with about 17,500 undergraduate students and nearly 9,000 graduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the US. Department of Education. The university includes medical and nursing schools. Women make up 48 percent of the undergraduate student body.

“The critical issues we face today have made it even more clear the important role higher education plays in educating tomorrow’s leaders and tackling today’s challenges by fostering cross-disciplinary research,” said Dr. McInnis. “At higher education institutions, our responsibility is not just to admit students but to give them the tools to succeed throughout their collegiate careers and after graduation. I’m honored for the opportunity to lead an institution that is both at the forefront of groundbreaking research and committed to advancing the American dream.”

Dr. McInnis is a cultural historian and since 2016 has served as executive vice president and provost at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, she spent nearly 20 years at the University of Virginia, rising to the post of vice provost for academic affairs. She is the author of five books including Slaves Waiting for Sale: Abolitionist Art and the American Slave Trade (University of Chicago Press, 2011).

Dr. McInnis is a graduate of the University of Virginia, where she majored in art history. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in art history from Yale University.
