Three Women Scholars Appointed to Dean Positions at Universities

Susan L. Perkins was appointed the Martin and Michele Cohen Dean of Science at The City College of New York. For the past 15 years, she has served as curator and professor of microbial genomics at the American Museum of Natural History. Dr. Perkins is the co-author of Welcome to the Microbiome: Getting to Know the Trillions of Bacteria and Other Microbes In, On, and Around You (Yale University Press, 2015).

Professor Perkins is a graduate of the State University of New York at Potsdam. She holds a Ph.D. in biology from the University of Vermont. She is a past president of the American Society of Parasitologists.

Mona Hicks was named dean of students at Stanford University in California. When she takes office in January, Dr. Hicks will also hold the title of associate vice provost. Dr. Hicks has been serving as associate vice president for student development and dean of students at Saint Louis University.

Dr. Hicks holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, a master’s degree in college student personnel from Western Illinois University, and a doctorate of education in higher education, leadership, and policy from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Cora Thompson has been appointed interim dean for the College of Education at Savannah State University in Georgia. Within the College of Education, Dr. Thompson serves as field placement and partnership coordinator, post-baccalaureate program coordinator, middle grades program coordinator, and associate professor.

Dr. Thompson earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Savannah State University, a master’s degree in education from Troy University in Alabama and a doctorate in educational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
