Four Women Scholars Appointed to Dean Positions at State Universities

Susan Anderson has been named the inaugural dean of rural medicine at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Dr. Anderson will continue serving the medical school as the director of its Frontier and Rural Medicine program and also as chair of the department of family medicine.

Dr. Anerson graduated from South Dakota State University in 1992 and graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 1997. She joined the faculty at the University of South Dakota in 2000.

Ellen McIntyre will be the next dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She will begin her new duties on January 21. Dr. McIntyre has been serving as dean of the Cato College of Education at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Earlier, Dr. McIntyre served as the interim associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Education at North Carolina State University.

McIntyre earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in reading education from Northern Kentucky University. She holds a doctorate in language and literacy education from the University of Cincinnati.

Theodorea Regina Berry was appointed dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She will also hold the title of vice provost for teaching and learning. Dr. Berry will begin her new duties in January. Currently, she is a professor and chair of the department of African American studies at San Jose State University in California. Prior to joining San Jose State University, Berry served in various leadership roles at the University of Texas in San Antonio. Dr. Berry is the author of States of Grace: Counterstories of a Black Woman in the Academy (Peter Lang International Academic Publishers, 2018).

Dr. Berry is a graduate of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania, where she majored in communication. She holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and a doctorate in curriculum and social policy from National-Louis University in Chicago.

Carol Johnson is the new dean of the College of Business at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. She has been serving as interim dean for the past year. Dr. Johnson teaches accounting in the business school. She has been teaching at the university since 1998.

Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA at the Univerity of Northern Michigan.
