Simmons University in Boston, Massachusetts, has created three new certificates for online masters of social work students: practice with groups and families, mental health practice, and trauma practice. The certificates are unique to Simmons and are not offered in any other national program.
In each of the new certificate programs, master’s candidates will learn from Simmons faculty who are experts in these areas, gain hands-on experience in the field, and be fully prepared to work in their area of focus upon graduation. The three new programs will officially launch in September 2019.
“We’re pleased at Simmons to be able to offer certificate opportunities to our MSW students in our online platform,” said Melinda Gushwa, associate professor, acting director of the School of Social Work and MSW program director. “This will give students the chance to build familiarity and gain emerging expertise in these valuable areas of practice.”
Dr. Gushwa is a graduate of the University of Redlands in California. She holds a master of social work degree from California State University, San Bernardino and a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis.
Simmons University enrolls about 1,700 students in its undergraduate programs for women. There are about 4,500 students enrolled in coeducational graduate programs.
